US mulling US-EU 'coordinated' Kosovo independence

This is how it should work out.

After pressing for a long time for Kosovo's independence, the United States for more than a month has been threatening to sidestep the United Nations in its quest to free the Albanian-majority province from Serbia.

Now it feels its own support and that of the European Union will grant Kosovo enough legitimacy to declare its independence unilaterally, aides to Rice said.

I must admit to being a little confused on the US position. Its clear they support an independent Kosovo. However, one day they state that unilateral recognition is an option and the next they are saying it is a bad thing, will only consider that option if they have to, or not official policy of the US.

I know they are involved in brinkmanship with Russia but they should not play with the emotions of people like this. Sometimes I think both Russia and the US have no idea that the Kosovo issue is a real one containing real people and not a pawn in their wider game of chess.

bg anon,

While I don't exclude the fact the Kosovo could be one of the pieces in the wider game, US position now seems to be: let's go through the moves and see what we can do knowing that independence is the final goal. Apparently due process (a European favorite) is important in diplomacy.

Mic,
Nowhere is "Serbia" mentioned in 1244. Enjoy Italy!

Serbia was the trouble maker of BALKAN, Serbia is the trouble maker of BALKAN and Serbia will be the trouble maker of THE UNITED EUROPE.
